Aldactone spironolactone is a medication that's used to treat many different disorders, from high blood pressure to fluid retention. Although the U. Food and Drug Administration doesn't officially recognize Aldactone as an acne treatment, aldactone 50 mg is often prescribed off-label to treat hormonally-influenced breakouts in women. Aldactone is only effective against acne caused by hormonal fluctuations, for example, women who consistently break out around the time of their monthly cycle. This is an acne treatment option for adult women only.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, or if aldactone 50 mg use a steroid or another diuretic. Avoid a diet high in salt. Too much salt will cause your body to retain water and can make this medication less effective.

Inclusive of all Taxes. This medication is a potassium-sparing diuretic, prescribed for hyperaldosteronism, low potassium levels, and for edema fluid retention caused by various conditions. It works by blocking the hormone aldosterone. It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.

Unnecessary use of this drug should be avoided. Inactive ingredients include calcium sulfate, corn starch, flavor, hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, povidone, and titanium dioxide. Establishing the diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism by therapeutic trial. Short-term preoperative treatment of patients with primary hyperaldosteronism. Long-term maintenance therapy for patients with discrete aldosterone -producing adrenal adenomas who are judged to be poor operative risks or who decline surgery.

Thirty-six women participated in the study and depending on the desire for contraception, 22 were treated with Diane and 14 with Aldactone. In contrast to the Aldactone treated group, the women on Diane medication demonstrated a marked decrease in circulating hormone levels with a subsequent effect on the hair parameters. The clinical effects were, however, not quite of the same degree as those seen with Aldactone treatment. The response time before any effect was observed was also longer than that seen with the Aldactone group.

Spironolactone

The range of effective doses is 50 to mg. One representative study involved Asian women, 64 of whom completed 20 weeks of treatment. A majority of patients reported no adverse effects associated with spironolactone therapy. In general, spironolactone is well tolerated, and side effects tend to be dose-dependent, said Schlosser. Patients who receive spironolactone for acne should have periodic laboratory tests to monitor renal function, electrolytes, and complete blood count, said Schlosser.

Patients' adherence to contraception should be monitored, along with pregnancy testing. Treatment with spironolactone may lead to elevated potassium levels, particularly in patients who are predisposed to hyperkalemia. Whether ongoing monitoring is necessary for women treated for acne remains an unresolved issue. If hyperkalemia is suspected warning signs include paresthesia, muscle weakness, fatigue, flaccid paralysis of the extremities, bradycardia, and shock, an electrocardiogram ECG should be obtained.

However, it is important to monitor serum potassium levels because mild hyperkalemia may not be associated with ECG changes. With severe hyperkalemia, the clinical situation dictates the procedures to be employed. These are temporary measures to be repeated as required. Cationic exchange resins such as sodium polystyrene sulfonate may be orally or rectally administered. Persistent hyperkalemia may require dialysis. Reversible hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, usually in association with hyperkalemia, has been reported to occur in some patients with decompensated hepatic cirrhosis, even in the presence of normal renal function.

Dilutional hyponatremia, manifested by dryness of the mouth, thirst, lethargy, and drowsiness, and confirmed by a low serum sodium level, may be caused or aggravated, especially when ALDACTONE is administered in combination with other diuretics, and dilutional hyponatremia may occur in edematous patients in hot weather; appropriate therapy is water restriction rather than administration of sodium, except in rare instances when the hyponatremia is life-threatening.

Somnolence and dizziness have been reported to occur in some patients.

Children should only be treated under guidance of a paediatric specialist. There is limited aldactone 50 mg data available see sections 5. For management of oedema an initial daily dose of mg of spironolactone administered in either single or divided doses is recommended, but may range from 25 mg to mg daily. Maintenance dose should be individually determined.

Correspondence: Adam J. For these patients, antihormonal therapy such as spironolactone is a valid and efficacious option. Some women will come in asking about spironolactone for acne, so it is important to identify potential candidates for antihormonal therapy. Evaluation of these women with acne for the possibility of hormonal imbalance may be necessary, with the 2 most common causes of hyperandrogenism being polycystic ovary syndrome and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The presence of alopecia, hirsutism, acanthosis nigricans, or other signs of androgen excess, in combination with dysmenorrhea or amenorrhea, may be an indication that the patient has an underlying medical condition that needs to be addressed.

There are other metabolic affects associated with chronic corticosteroid use including: redistribution of fat giving the typical moon face and buffalo hump; hyperglycaemia and possible diabetes; protein loss from skeletal muscles with wasting and weakness; increased bone metabolism leading to osteoporosis; and aldactone 50 mg inhibition in children due to early closure of the epiphyseal plates in long bones. Adverse reactions to anti-inflammatory corticosteroids are summarized This is a diverse group of drugs that do not inhibit COX; neither do they have analgesic or direct anti-inflammatory activity. They appear to suppress the disease process in rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic inflammatory conditions and may cause remission of disease. These are the disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Unlike NSAIDs and corticosteroids, they do not produce an immediate therapeutic effect but require four to six months of treatment for a full response.

They handle drugs. It is likely that many older patients will have one or more cardiac disorders and possibly hypertension as well. This is a huge area of therapeutics and there are many drugs available to treat these conditions. Common heart disorders are cardiac failure, ischaemic heart disease and disorders of heart rhythm. Hypertension is included here because many of the drugs used to treat heart disorders are also used in hypertension.

Parasitic worms are multicellular organisms, which are not always microscopic and are difficult to eliminate by the immune system. They do elicit an immune reaction, mostly by production of immunoglobulin E and attack by eosinophils, which can be harmful to the host.
