It is used to treat edema fluid retention that occurs with congestive heart failure and disorders of the liver, kidney, and lung. It is also used to control mild to moderate high blood pressure. It may be used in combination with other medications to treat more severe high blood pressure. Furosemide works by increasing the amount of urine produced and excreted, and by removing excessive water edema from the body.

This means initially that with exercise the organs and tissues do not have an adequate blood supply. As the condition progresses the supply may not be sufficient even at rest. Cardiac failure can result if the myocardium is damaged by ischaemia, if the heart is inefficient due to valve disease or because of excessive peripheral vascular resistance and hypertension. Depending on the precipitating factors, cardiac failure can affect either side of the heart or both.

Orthostatic hypotension may occur during treatment with loop diuretics. Drug-induced hypovolemia can precipitate azotemia in these patients.

Excessive hypotension can result in syncope. Bioavailability is variable. According to the Beers Criteria, diuretics are considered potentially inappropriate medications PIMs in geriatric patients and should be used with caution due to the potential for causing or exacerbating SIADH or hyponatremia. Adjust to minimum effective dose for maintenance; large doses are not recommended for chronic use.

Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of normal adult doses. In general, dose selection for elderly patients should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis.

The CMP would come to an end at any time at the discretion of either the independent prescriber or the supplementary prescriber or at the request of the patient. Coincidental increased activity of furosemide of 40 mg is not as serious. Lipid-soluble drugs enter cells readily. Distribution of such drugs is widespread unless plasma protein binding is extensive. Elimination of lipid-soluble drugs is usually slow because clearance from plasma via the kidneys removes only a small proportion of the drug in any given time.
