Or in a crisis, text NAMI to All FDA black box warnings are at the end of this fact sheet. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine. It is approved for the treatment of anxiety, acute seizures, status epilepticus continuous seizures, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, and as a medication given right before anesthesia. However, benzodiazepines are also commonly used to treat difficulty sleeping.

As with other benzodiazepines, diazepam should be used with caution in patients with pulmonary disease. Additionally, avoid coadministration with other CNS depressants, especially opioids, unless no other alternatives are available as coadministration significantly increases the risk for respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and death. Oral diazepam tablets are contraindicated for use in those with severe respiratory insufficiency or sleep apnea syndrome. Diazepam should be used with caution in other pulmonary diseases as well including severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD, sleep apnea, asthma, or pneumonia because the drug can exacerbate ventilatory failure. Lower doses are recommended in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency. Use lower initial adult doses for the debilitated adult patient. Initially, 1 to 2.

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative. Diazepam is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety or tension associated with the stress of everyday life usually does not require treatment with an anxiolytic. In acute alcohol withdrawal, diazepam may be useful in the symptomatic relief of acute agitation, tremor, impending or acute delirium tremens and hallucinosis. Oral diazepam may be used adjunctively in convulsive disorders, although it has not proved useful as the sole therapy.

Each 5 ml of suspension also contains 3. The use of diazepam to treat short-term anxiety is inappropriate and unsuitable. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms: 5 mg valium 5 mg cost 20 mg repeated within 2 to 4 hours if necessary. Premedication in dental patients: 5 mg the night before, 5 mg on waking and another 5 mg 2 hours before the appointment. Doses should be repeated only on medical advice.

Diazepam has potent anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and central muscle-relaxing properties; these effects are probably mediated through special areas in the CNS. It also has uses in pre-operative medication and is used in the treatment of skeletal-muscle spasm, and the associated pain.

Hormones are used in some hormone-dependent cancers to suppress or antagonize the particular hormone involved. In addition there are miscellaneous anti-cancer drugs including biological response modifiers, which are intended to enhance the patients natural immune response to cancer cells.

Absorption of a drug from the gastrointestinal tract is normally by diffusion and depends on many factors including lipid solubility and pH of the gastrointestinal contents. Once absorbed into the blood stream, a drug is distributed around the body. From the gastrointestinal tract, a drug goes to the liver in the hepatic portal system where it is likely to be metabolized. Metabolism usually makes a drug more water soluble and less pharmacologically active. Distribution to the rest of the body depends on how well a drug can pass across cell membranes. Some drugs can be sequestered in certain tissues, particularly fat and muscle.
