There are likely to be many nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals who meet the criteria for training to become supplementary prescribers.

For details of injection techniques, Whatever the route of administration, a drug must reach its site of action. In order to do this, the drug will have to cross several cell membranes to reach the blood (unless it is injected intravenously). The three ways by which substances, including drugs, can cross cell membranes are simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport. Diffusion is the mechanism by which the vast majority of drugs pass across cell membranes. Both simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion are passive processes in that no energy is required other than the kinetic energy of the molecules themselves.
An episode of gout can be triggered by excessive alcohol consumption, a diet high in purines, surgery, sudden severe illness, injury to a joint, use of diuretics or chemotherapy. Over several years, uric acid crystals can build up in other tissues to form large deposits, called tophiunder the skin. Tophi are often found in or near severely affected joints, on or near the elbow, over the fingers and toes and in the outer edge of the ear. Uric acid crystals can form stones in the kidneys, in the ureters or in the bladder. Gout can occur at any age, but the first attack often affects men between the ages of Almost all people with gout have excess uric acid in their blood, a condition called hyperuricaemia.
Following European Directive European Law requires the use of the recommended International Non-proprietary Name (rINN). This ensures that all countries, in Europe at least, recognize the same drug. In most cases, the BAN and the rINN were the same, but some British names have been changed.
However, there are many people who have hyperuricaemia but do not suffer from gout. Hyperuricaemia can result from the kidneys being unable to excrete uric acid fast enough or buying differin gel the body making too much uric acid. Approaches to management of gout include treatment of acute attacks with anti-inflammatory drugs and medication to control uric acid levels long term, either by increasing elimination of uric acid or by reducing the amount of uric acid being produced. Colchicine has been used to treat gout for over swelling of acute attacks. It works best if taken during the first two days of an attack.

There are in fact five ways in which suitably qualified and registered health care professionals can supply medicines to patients: patient group directions, patient specific directions (PSDs), supplementary prescribing, independent prescribing and specific exemptions to the Medicines Act. The first three of these require a working partnership with medically qualified professionals; the last two do not.
